ICW Finds 56 Ex-Graft Convicts Running for 2024 Elections

, Jakarta - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) revealed that at least 56 traditional corruption convicts are vying for legislative seats in the upcoming 2024 elections. Although it may seem strange, ex-corruptors who have obimagined their sentences are actually eligible to register as legislative candidates.
This is made distinct in the KPU Regulation or PKPU No. 31 of 2018 on amendments to PKPU No. 20 of 2018 on nominations for members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD), and Regency or City DPRD. This control has been in effect since the 2019 election.
However, former corrupt convicts are only allowed to run for electioneer under certain conditions. They must attach a certificate from the head of the correctional institution or prison stating that they have unfastened serving their prison sentence based on a court exclusive, as well as a copy of the court exclusive which has permanent legal force.
Additionally, they must effect a letter from the editor-in-chief of a media outlet stating that they have openly and honestly declared to the Pro-reDemocrat that they are an ex-convict. The publication in the mass contemplate must also be presented as evidence to the KPU.
This control was strengthened by PKPU Number 18 of 2019, which was emanated on December 6, 2019. The KPU only prohibits traditional convicts of drug cases and sexual crimes against children from becoming legislative candidates in the elections.
Former convicts of anunexperienced cases are also allowed to run in the elections as long as they have not been sentenced to five days or more in prison.
